Nervous about your first class? Here's exactly what happens from the moment you walk in to the final stretch.
Walking into a new class can feel a little intimidating, especially if you don't consider yourself a dancer. The good news? Everyone in the room was a first-timer once. Here's what a typical session looks like so you can arrive feeling relaxed.
Before class: arrive a little early
Aim to arrive about 15 minutes before start time. Check in with your name or booking reference (a screenshot of your confirmation is perfect), fill your water bottle and find a spot. Let the instructor know it's your first time. They'll keep an eye out and show you easier options.
The warm-up (5–10 minutes)
Class starts with gentle moves to raise your heart rate and loosen your joints. This is also where the instructor introduces a few of the basic steps you'll use later, so it's a great time to get comfortable.
The main workout (35–45 minutes)
Expect a series of songs, each with its own short routine. Some tracks are fast and bouncy, others slower to let you recover. Instructors mostly teach by showing rather than explaining, using hand signals to flag what's coming next. If you miss a step, just keep moving. March on the spot and jump back in when the pattern repeats.
Cool-down and stretch (5–10 minutes)
The final tracks bring your heart rate down, followed by stretches for your legs, hips, back and shoulders. Don't skip it. It helps you feel better the next day.
How you'll feel afterwards
- Sweaty (in the best way), so bring a towel.
- Energised and in a great mood thanks to all those endorphins.
- Maybe a little sore the next day, especially calves and glutes. That's normal and fades quickly.
